International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) Non-State Actors Working Group Nepal Mission (8-14 June 2003)

The ICBL NSA Working Group Mission 8-14 June 2003, visited Nepal to assess the landmine situation and encourage the parties to the conflict to adhere to international norms on prohibiting the use, production, transfer and stockpile of landmines. or of peace talk; Ramesh Nath Pandey, former minister and member of government negotiating team; Hon. Sushil Koirala, general secretary of Nepali Congress; Ex. Prime Minster Sher Bahdur Deuwa, president of Nepali Congress (Democratic); Ex. Deputy Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, general secretary of Communist Party Nepal (UML); Mr. Krishna Bahadur Mahara, Maoists leader and member of peace talk team; Rt. Hon. Nayan Bahadur Khatri, Chair-National Human Rights Commission, Brig. Gen. Kul Bahadur Khadka; Additional Inspector General Ravi Kanta Aryal of Police; Additional Inspector General Ravi Raj Thapa of Arm Police. Mission discussed about the landmines issue with the personals mentioned above and also called to include landmine clause in the code of conduct of peace dialogue between the Nepalese Government and the Maoists.

Mission also held different interaction programs with 25 human rights and peace organizations, Embassies and international NGOs in Nepal.

The mission organized press conference on 14 June 2003 in Kathmandu. Different daily & weekly news papers, FMs, Radios, TV channels and other international news agencies covered the news on this mission and the landmine issue.

The ICBL Mission was composed of Miriam Coronel Ferrer co-chair of the ICBL Working Group; Purna Shova Chitrakar, coordinator of the Nepal Campaign to Ban Landmines; Saliya Edirisinghe of the Sri Lanka Campaign to Ban Landmines; Soliman Santos, Jr of the Philippine Campaign and Geneva Call; Patricia Pak Poy of the Australian Campaign; Motoko Mekata of the Japan Campaign; Rafique Al-Islam of Non-Violence International Bangladesh; Bhagawati Devi Gautam a victim of Government mine of Rukum; and Hari Jang Shah victim of Maoist mine of Rukum.

The mission and all the meetings were organized by Ban Landmines Campaign Nepal (NCBL). This mission was sponsored by International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL).
