Lobbing
& Advocacy
NCBL is established in July 1995. It is a member of General Meeting of
International Campaign to Ban Landmines since 1998. It is organizing different
activities on advocacy and lobbying, Mine Risk Education, Victim Assistance
and Landmine Monitor Research. NCBL meetings have been attended and addressed
by: the Prime Minister, the Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary
Affairs, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Judge of the Supreme Court.
Senior officers of the army, police and armed police have also
participated and presented papers in the various programs. International
involvement has included the Ambassadors of Bangladesh and Pakistan,
representatives of the Indian embassy, ICRC and UNICEF.
NCBL
organized a national conference on “Landmines and Human Rights” in 1997.
They are active in lobbying of parliamentarians to make them aware of the
threat and to ban landmines. In 1999 and a second national conference on,
“Towards the Global Ban of Landmines” was again held.
Additionally
there have been seminars and meetings held for, children, political parties,
women, students, religious and professional organizations.
NCBL attended the South Asian level Landmines Monitoring meeting. A
nationwide inner-school art competition and demonstration was also organized
in 2001. Again in 2002 a national seminar on “The Emergency and Landmines”
is planned.
The NCBL has been putting pressure on the government and parliament to ratify the Ottawa Treaty. As a result the parliament has defined landmines as dangerous weapons in the “ Terrorist Activities Control and Punishment Act, 2058” and has prohibited their use. The NCBL have also developed limited media campaigns and produced its own posters.
